protagonist (n.)
[proh-tag-uh-nist]
1) the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary work
Victor Frankenstein
As mentioned on the antagonist page, I believe that Dr. Frankenstein and the Monster are both the protagonists and antagonists. I will only be speaking about why Dr. Frankenstein is the protagonist, since that is the most common view of him. Not many people would think of him as the antagonist because in one's mind, protagonists are good and antagonists are bad.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein is the man who started the whole mess. He's the one who created a monster, and carelessly let it go off into the world. Like I said on the hamartia page, his extreme pride and arrogance decided his fate in the story.
He would be considered the protagonist because he is the main character. We follow him in the story. We know his thoughts, and see everything from his point of view. |
