Chapter 7
The Painting
Frankenstein goes into his father's house and sees a painting over the fireplace. In the painting, his mother is crying over her father's coffin. There is actually a story behind this. Victor's father, Alphonse, had first seen Victor's mother, Caroline Beaufort, at her father's funeral. She was in great despair and looked like she was in desperate need of help. In Chapter 1, Frankenstein said "This last blow overcame her; and she knelt by Beaufort's coffin, weeping bitterly, when my father entered the chamber. He came like a protecting spirit to the poor girl, who committed herself to his care; and after the interment of his friend, he conducted her to Geneva, and placed her under the protection of a relation. Two years after this event Caroline became his wife." He had felt bad for her, and had fallen in love with her. It was more of "pity love," but they still loved each other anyways. In a way, Alphonse had "saved" Caroline. Frankenstein's creature had woken up, confused and not knowing what to do, but Frankenstein had left him there. You could say that Frankenstein didn't "save" his creation.
Chapter 9
